About Us

Fog City Investigations is a full service, Private Investigation firm, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. We also have investigative offices located through out California, Tennessee, Oregon, Florida, and New York. We provide businesses, corporations, attorneys and individuals with the information they need to make more informed business and personal decisions. Our firm's investigative training and experience exceeds 120 years, and our investigators are court certified experts in their respective field.

Fog City Investigations was established in 1991 by Douglas Hansen, while he still worked with the San Francisco Police Department. Based on Mr. Hansen's reputation for honesty and hard work, San Francisco officials asked him to set up and manage a large security team for a multi-million dollar housing project being developed in the Bay View/Hunters Point area of San Francisco. During this time, officer Hansen was working in the City's rapid response Housing Task Force. Mr. Hansen asked and was granted permission by his department to take a leave and handle this security assignment. This separation from the department enabled him to form a complete company and devote 100% of his time to this complicated and dangerous assignment.

Mr. Hansen successfully completed this project , and was again asked to provide armed security agents, this time for Sumitomo Banks located in San Francisco and Oakland. After completing this latter assignment, Mr. Hansen returned to the police department, only to retire a short time later. He decided to devote all his time to his new security and investigation business.

Fog City Investigations now provides private investigative services for corporations and businesses throughout California and the Country. We have a large list of clients in the San Francisco Greater Bay Area, including, but not limited to; State Compensation Insurance Fund, State Farm Insurance, General Dynamics, Liberty Mutual, Northwestern Mutual Life, the City of Oakland, and the California Administrative Court System.

Our clients are extremely happy with our finished work product. We try to maintain the highest level of Integrity and Accountability every day in our effort to assist our clients as best we can.

On June 21, 2006, CBS NEWS, Channel 5 in San Francisco, did a story on "Information Brokers" and featured"Fog City Investigations" in their story. Douglas Hansen, known as a venerated private investigator, to "all Investigators in the Know" was called upon by CBS news management to do an interview on "Personal Privacy" and to talk about how data brokers routinely sell personal information on individuals, as well as commercial information on businesses. The story was well received and aired twice on TV. Mr. Hansen did a great job explaining what "personal" and "commercial" information is, how it affects everyone, and how brokers get it, legal and otherwise.

Hansen's Professional Achievements

After earning a degree in Criminal Justice, Mr. Hansen worked over 23 years as a law enforcement investigator conducting in-depth criminal investigations. Mr. Hansen has qualified as an investigative expert through out the country, and testifies accordingly in court. Mr. Hansen is a graduate and Valedictorian of four Major Law Enforcement Academies, and has completed numerous investigative training programs over a 30 year period. Some of Mr. Hansen's most notable accomplishments include:

While working as a Police Investigator, Mr. Hansen received two medals of valor involving firearms and shootings, three Police Commission Commendations with S.F.P.D., One F.B.I commendation for investigating, and following-up on and apprehending FIVE ARMED BANK ROBBERS, within eight hours of the Bank Robbery(while working as a state narcotic agent), and over 200 Captain commendations for heroism and outstanding police work from S.F.P.D..

Mr. Hansen's most notable criminal case, as a private investigator, was the People v Burleson (1995 - 2000). A complex criminal case involving, Domestic Violence, a convicted murderer diagnosed as an insane genius, (The Real Hannibal) who was facing California's "Three Strikes" law, & life in prison regardless of the verdict, Stalking, assault, and tape recordings of 19 hours of terrifying phone calls where the suspect told his wife, how he was going to murder her elderly parents in the most horrifying fashion. After listening to these tapes and listening to this monster talk for months about the murder of my father, (the prison grapevine tells all about people), I was pushed to far. I finished my job and actually got his assault charges "Found Not Guilty" by the jury, due to an outstanding job of using experts on my part. This man/case was so horrifying, that it shook me to my core and I refused to do these cases for the next five years.

One of Mr. Hansen's most notable in-depth civil cases took almost two years to complete, (2004 - 2006), and literally saved a corporation one hundred and fifty million dollars. Mr. Hansen exposed the perpetrator to his client within days of them losing control of the corporation to a very clever ex-convict.
